Ms. Addie Loy is a dedicated educator with an extensive background in teaching and educational leadership. She has been working as the Director of Program Development at ISNS for many years.
Hailing from Michigan, US, Addie began her career as a public-school teacher in Kentucky, where she taught for nine years before transitioning to post-secondary education. With a passion for language development, she obtained a Master"s degree in English language development and ventured to China to pursue teaching English.
Upon joining ISNS, Addie assumed the role of leading the English department. Her commitment to professional growth led her to earn a certificate in advanced educational leadership from the Harvard School of Education. She is also at the completion of her doctoral studies in comparative international education, focusing on improving schools by comprehending educational systems worldwide.
Believing in the importance of connecting education to real-world challenges, Addie advocates for empowering students through inquiry, problem-solving, and collaboration. Her teaching experience spans multiple subjects, including history, geography, and English as a Second or Foreign Language (ESL). As an IB workshop leader and member of school visit teams, she actively contributes to educational conferences and shares her expertise with other educators. As the Director of the Program, Addie has played a crucial role in enhancing the academic standards and comprehensive approach to teaching and learning at the International School of Nanshan Shenzhen (ISNS) within the IB framework. Her efforts have positioned our school as a frontrunner in Shenzhen, ensuring that our academic programs are rigorous and holistic.
How do you plan to balance the needs of different stakeholders at the school, including students, parents, faculty, and staff, while still ensuring that the school is moving forward in a positive direction?
The Head of School plays a crucial role in setting and communicating expectations to foster a shared vision and mission within the school community. Encouraging growth among teachers and parents, promoting understanding of international education, and providing opportunities for professional development are fundamental aspects of achieving the school"s mission. Creating a safe and open environment, where effective communication thrives, is of utmost importance.
Transparency and approachability are key qualities for leaders and teachers to ensure that students are in a secure and conducive learning environment. The focus is on the well-being and success of students, with the school dedicated to making decisions that align with these goals.
How do you plan to address issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion at the school, and what steps do you plan to take to ensure that all students feel valued and supported?
Diversity, equity, inclusion and justice is a really big social issue right now. My biggest focus is to make sure that whatever we do is developmentally appropriate and what is culturally appropriate for the community that we"re in. It"s about evaluating our program and making sure that we"re following a developmentally appropriate curriculum and considering the needs of our families in the culture or the host country that we"re in.
How do you plan to ensure that ISNS remains at the forefront of international education in the region, and what steps do you plan to take to maintain the school"s reputation for academic excellence?
To provide students with diverse educational experiences, both inside and outside the classroom, is a key priority. Ensuring relevant and engaging resources is crucial for student involvement and fostering a safe learning environment. Moreover, attracting talented educators and showcasing the school"s excellence is essential.
By cultivating a positive community, making sound decisions, and maintaining strong processes and policies, the school can continue to thrive and achieve significant accomplishments. The overall goal is to create a healthy and contented environment where everyone feels valued and motivated to be part of the school community.
What do you think about technology integration?
In evaluating technology integration, the focus should shift from students being consumers to becoming creators. The aim is to introduce more ICT, robotics, app development, and design elements such as textile, wood, metal, and 3D modeling. The goal is to cultivate students" skills and move away from passive consumption. This shift in perspective requires time as students build necessary competencies. The approach to technology in schools needs to be reimagined to prioritize active engagement and creativity.
